The AMS is calling for applications for its new program, Career Development Grants in American Music. The program provides grants of $800 to students and educators who have a special interest in American music to attend the 2023 AMS-SMT Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Grantees will also receive complimentary registration for the 2023 Annual Meeting.

The purpose of the grants are to support participation in annual meeting programming that deepens participants’ knowledge of American music and strengthens their professional networks. Grants may be used to pay travel expenses or as a stipend/per diem to offset lost worktime. Grant recipients will participate in relevant activities at the upcoming AMS-SMT Annual Meeting in Denver as part of a cohort of twelve.

Cohort Activities:

Grantees will be expected to attend a featured lecture on topics of American music, as well as participate in a special “American Music” track programmed as part of the AMS-SMT Annual Meeting, to be held 9-12 November 2023 in Denver, Colorado. This track has been designed to encourage further learning about American music by spotlighting important research in this area. Grantees are expected to attend a 45-minute networking cohort session on each of the first 3 days of the conference that help them network and connect to current conversations in humanistic music studies.

Eligibility:

Application is open to educators at all levels (K-12, as well as higher education) and students currently enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral program who have a demonstrated interest in American music. Applicants must be legal residents of the United States.

Selected grantees will receive complimentary registration for the 2023 AMS-SMT Annual Meeting and will be required to attend at least six sessions on the American Music track, as well as specified cohort activities, over the course of the four days of the annual meeting. Participants may select sessions out of 20 sessions in the American Music track.

Recipients of a 2023 AMS Annual Meeting Travel Grant are welcome to apply for this grant. However, the awards are not additive. Career Development Grant recipients who have already received an AMS Annual Meeting Travel Grant will receive a supplementary payment that will bring their entire support for annual meeting attendance to $800.
